CoRBA Affiliations
Until recently, resident groups within the City of Melbourne boundaries formed a combined association known as CoRA (Coalition of Residents’ Associations). Each separate group sent a representative to CoRA meetings where issues of common interest to all Melbourne residents were dealt with.
However in mid 2007, due to major concerns about anomalies within the City of Melbourne Council, business associations chose to join CoRA. The expanded association is know as CoRBA – Melbourne.
The intransigence of the John So Council directly led to the expansion of CoRBA affiliations. The So Council repeatedly rejected calls for a review of the Council structure and its electoral processes. This disregard for due process, and blatant dismissal of sustained evidence of constituent concern, is why business groups chose to join forces with CORA.
CoRBA believes that by collaborating we can more effectively work towards achieving the necessary electoral and structural reform our City deserves. Regular reform at the Local Government level is crucial – it is the very heart of our democracy.
Fortunately, the Doyle councillors honored election promises and at their first meeting, unanimously voted to call upon the Minister to initiate a review. A copy of the resolution and the Lord Mayors letter to Minister Wynne can be viewed here.
