OUR NEW LORD MAYOR

Here is a first crack at developing a job description for our new Lord Mayor.

Please read it, and then send us any ideas you may have. Pretend you are a HR consultant and the citizens of Melbourne have asked you to list the qualities we should look for when electing a new Lord Mayor in November 2008.

These were our first thoughts:

a) A person of integrity, able to represent Melbourne with intelligence and  clear vision.

b) Able to work positively and constructively with all fellow Councillors rather than rely on a select few.

c) A good chairperson, able to conduct meetings and encourage positive outcomes

d) Able to represent the City of Melbourne in an inclusive manner: representing a wide variety of interests.

e) Understand the diverse populations of Our City – tourists (overseas and Australian); international and local students; small traders; major businesses; workers of all kinds; residents…

f) Understand Council relationships with other levels of Government – local, State and Federal.

g) Establish and maintain a good working relationship with all Council officers and staff.

h) Oversee sound financial management; and ensure timely and  accurate disclosure of information, financial and otherwise.

i) Be willing and able to explain Council policies and activities to the citizens and the media.

j) Able to demonstrate good community leadership and work to balance the needs and interests of all.

k) Have respect for Melbourne’s heritage and vision for its future.
