No More Rhetoric Please! A letter to the Editor of The Age calling for the Government to set up a small group to look at all the issues and seek a “whole of community” way out.

In a letter to the editor of The Age on May 8th 2009, Residents 3000 president, Peter Matthews, advocates a new approach to the issue of safety in Our City.

This is a community issue that needs a “whole of community” approach. That is why a coalition of business and residents associations have proposed setting up a small advisory committee comprising one representative of each relevant Government Department (eg Police, Consumer Affairs, Justice), the City Council, business, licensees, residents and student hostels, welfare groups, researchers. Ideally not more than 12 people.

 This small, but representative, group would not publish reports but would advise Government in confidence. This would avoid “grandstanding” and ensure that Government receives on-going, well-considered advice. Read more here.
